As you’ve driven along the front of Potomac Point Winery on any given day, searching for a parking spot so you can come inside and indulge, you may have noticed our lovely Italian statue, perched just to the right of the Tasting Room entrance. Did you know she has a name? Even more importantly, did you know she has a story? Maybe you’ve never paid her any mind, but we feel pretty confident that once you hear this, you’re going to pay closer attention next time you pass her by!
It all started almost 8 years ago now, when Cindi and Skip Causey were finally watching their dream become a reality, and Potomac Point Winery was under construction. They decided to have that very statue shipped over from Italy, as a way of paying homage to the country that inspired them so much while dreaming up Potomac Point. As the crane that was going to put the statue in place began to lower her into the nook that she now resides in, every bystander was on pins and needles, terrified that the gorgeous but fragile work of art dangling in front of them would come crashing down at any moment, shattering into a million pieces. As the crane gently lowered her down, all seemed to be well, until she began to teeter ever so slightly. Every witness that was present held their breath and prepared for the worst, when finally the dreaded crash was heard. What everyone expected to hear next were cries of despair, since that priceless Italian gem was now, for all intents and purposes, ruined. But what happened next was completely out of the blue and threw everyone for a loop…Cindi burst out laughing! Once she was finally able to regain composure, she affectionately named this new addition to the winery “La Belle Vie, the Amputee.” The casualties of that fateful day? One finger. A finger that it now proudly displayed in the Potomac Point Winery Tasting Room! Rest assured, the remainder of her fingers are still firmly attached to the rest of her body, which sits right outside our doors. However we think La Belle Vie the Amputee looks perfect with only 9!
Do you enjoy learning the fun facts and hidden surprises that lie within the walls of Potomac Point Winery? Wouldn’t you love to know more, like how a couple of furry rascals earned our Coyote Wine Cave its name? Or maybe what piece of Stafford, VA history our Richland Ballroom is named for? You can hear the answers to all of those questions and more if you join us for a facility tour, which run on Saturdays and Sundays! Tours run throughout the day, based on availability, and you can find out more about how to join in the fun at:
