Potomac Point Winery is thrilled to announce that our owner, Skip Causey, has been awarded the distinguished David King Advocate of the Year Award by the Virginia Wineries Association. This prestigious honor recognizes Skip’s significant contributions and tireless advocacy on behalf of Virginia’s vibrant wine industry.

The David King Award is named after a true pioneer of Virginia wine and is awarded annually to an individual who “does the work” for the industry—contributing exceptional leadership, dedication, and advocacy. Skip’s recognition is a testament to his relentless efforts and passion for supporting Virginia wineries and vineyards.

A Journey of Passion and Dedication

Skip’s journey into the wine industry is one of deep commitment and enthusiasm. After beginning a career in construction right out of college, Skip built and developed homes and communities for 36 years. He met his wife, Cindi, in the early 80s, and together, they discovered a shared passion for wine. What began with Skip volunteering at local wineries soon turned into serious study; he received certificates in viticulture and enology from Piedmont College, solidifying his knowledge and dedication to the field.

In 2005, Skip and Cindi purchased land in Northern Virginia, and by 2007, Potomac Point Winery opened its doors, quickly becoming a beloved destination for wine lovers near and far. Over the years, Skip and Cindi have continuously invested in elevating the quality of their wines and expanding Potomac Point’s offerings. From 2006 to 2021, Potomac Point benefited from the expertise of two European-trained winemakers, which further shaped the winery’s approach to winemaking.

After retiring from homebuilding in 2019, Skip stepped into the role of winemaker at Potomac Point, working closely with his assistant, Jordan Cleary, to oversee all aspects of the vineyard and cellar. Alongside his role as General Manager, Skip has found immense joy in crafting wines and ensuring future releases carry the Potomac Point legacy.

A Legacy of Advocacy and Leadership

Skip’s dedication to the Virginia wine community extends beyond Potomac Point. As the immediate past president of the Virginia Vineyards Association and co-chair of the Virginia Wineries Legislative Board, Skip has actively supported legislation and initiatives that benefit vineyards and wineries throughout the state. His commitment to helping new vineyard and winery owners has earned him respect and admiration from peers, making him a fitting recipient of this award.

Looking Ahead

Skip’s contributions to Virginia wine have not only helped Potomac Point flourish but have also enriched the broader industry. His work is building a future for Virginia wineries that fosters innovation, growth, and camaraderie.

Please join us in congratulating Skip on this remarkable achievement! We look forward to seeing how his leadership and vision continue to shape Potomac Point Winery and the Virginia wine industry as a whole. Cheers to Skip Causey—2024’s David King Advocate of the Year!
